Why this castle
Beynac never fell into ruin and was never modernised into something else. The barbican, the double walls and moats, the courtyard, the twelfth-century keep, the great hall and the medieval kitchen are all standing and all in period, which means a crew can point a camera at them without building very much. The village below helps: cobbled lanes and golden stone from the twelfth century onwards, with the river underneath.
