The village is built up the side of the cliff in quarters the Périgord calls barris, and the route du Château threads through them from the river to the gate. It is cobbled, it is narrow in places, and it does not level out. Ten to fifteen minutes is the honest figure for an unhurried adult starting at La Balme or Le Capeyrou; it is longer with small children and longer again on a hot afternoon, because there is little shade on the upper half. Coming down is quick and the cobbles are the reason to wear something with a sole. Which lot puts you where.
The short way
Parking du Château and La Dîme sit at the top of the route du Château, a minute or two from the entrance, and they are the reason some visitors never meet the climb at all. They are also the first lots to fill on a summer morning and there is no shuttle from below, so the plan that works is an early arrival — the castle opens at nine between 4 July and 30 August. Inside the walls
The climb does not stop at the gate. The castle’s own statement is that it is not suitable for visitors with reduced mobility, and the reasons are specific: many steps, floors that are uneven because they are original, and a twelfth-century spiral stair. A seventeenth-century open-work straight staircase in the Italian fashion was added beside the spiral one, which helps with part of the route and does not turn the building into a level one. Anyone who cannot manage stairs will get the terrace view and the courtyard from the village lane instead, and that view is genuinely one of the best in the valley. What is in each room.
What to wear and what to carry
- Shoes with a grip. Cobbles, worn stone treads and a spiral stair.
- Water in summer. The lane faces the sun and the terrace has no shade.
- A charged phone. The audio commentary downloads to your own handset at the entrance and runs there rather than on a device you collect.
- A lead, if the dog is with you. Dogs on a lead are welcome.
